Tortilla Slap Review

One thing that I love about social media is how it allows people to share their games and experiences with the world. And that’s how Tortilla Slap came onto my radar. Persuing TikTok one day, I saw this game as a ‘challenge,’ and immediately knew that I had to try it. So I rounded up Travis and a couple other friends and we gave it a go. And it was hilarious!

Tortilla Slap is a party game for 2-5 players (although you can probably play with more) in which your goal is to not laugh. All you need to play are tortillas and water. To setup for the game, each player receives one tortilla. Everyone also takes a swig of water, but don’t swallow it! Simply hold the water in your mouth. Choose a starting player, and the game is ready to begin!

The starting player will secretly choose an opponent and will suddenly slap them across the face with the tortilla. If any player laughs and spits out their water, they lose and are out of the game. Then, the player who was just slapped will secretly select an opponent and slap them across the face with the tortilla. The game continues, and hilarity ensues, until there is one player remaining who has not yet spit out their water. They are declared the winner!

All in all, I enjoyed Tortilla Slap more than I originally thought I would. The amount of player interaction is great, and it’s all light and in good fun – there is no real cut-throat atmosphere in this game. If you’re looking to add some strategy to Tortilla Slap, I’ve seen versions played in which two players will Rock-Paper-Scissors, and then the winner gets to slap the loser with the tortilla. Either way is hilarious and fun, so play how your group wants to!

To touch briefly on components, it all comes down to your tortillas. Buying high-quality tortillas will definitely elevate the gameplay, as they should last for most, if not all, of the gameplay. Occasionally, a tortilla will rip or break apart during the game, but that player can simply get a new tortilla to continue. Be warned about using stale tortillas though – they won’t tear as easily and are a little more stiff, which could hurt to get slapped with one. This next point isn’t necessarily component related, but I would recommend playing Tortilla Slap outside – that way you don’t have to worry about cleaning up water inside.

As you can see from our rating graphic, Purple Phoenix Games gives Tortilla Slap a solid 7 / 12. If you’ve never tried this game, I would highly recommend it, as it’s just a good time overall!

Ok, so obviously this review is a joke. But we did actually play Tortilla Slap, and we did have a hilariously fun time with it. So yeah, maybe it’s not a ‘real’ game that you bring to game nights, but I would recommend you at least try it once. It’s amazingly funny, and you’ll have a blast laughing with your friends!
