In the expansion review series, we take a look at a game expansion to discuss whether it is a necessary purchase/addition to one’s collection.
This breakdown is for the now two to six player game Doctor Who: Time of the Daleks and this expansion, Fifth Doctor and Tenth Doctor, from Gale Force Nine.
This expansion includes two new Doctors, per the title, and their bits, along with more dilemmas and locations, and new player colors. So now I can finally play my favorite Doctor in orange! It’s Tennant, by the way. THE Doctor.
So aside from adding my favorite Doctor and color to the game, along with his IRL father-in-law, and a few new other bits, there is no alteration of any rules or mechanics. You can now, with this expansion, play up to six players, but I do not think more is better with this game. This is the classic, “more of the same.” Well, the TARDIS mats for the new Doctors are rigid cardboard instead of the base game floppy card stock. So that’s an improvement.
Is it necessary to own? No. It is super nice to be able to play my favorite Doctor now (though Matt Smith is a very close second) and my favorite color, but I think this is a preferential addition to anyone’s copy. Unless you are absolutely jonesing to play this with six players (may God have mercy on your soul), I think it is more for the specific Doctors to be added.
Official recommendation: Grab it if you are a fan of the base game and have a special affinity toward Five or Ten, but pass if you are looking for something to change the rules a bit or improve gameplay somehow. This ain’t it. But it’s got Ten and orange, so there’s something fantastic.
