In the expansion review series, we take a look at a game expansion to discuss whether it is a necessary purchase/addition to one’s collection.
This breakdown is for the expansion for the amazing game Destinies, and this expansion titled Destinies: Witchwood.
This expansion adds quite a few more components to assimilate into the base game, which is necessary to play the new content. Similar components to the original include: 55 new Item cards, 12 Destiny cards, 45 Map tiles, 14 minis, and 12 cards to add to the Bound by Fate expansion. Also included when backed through Gamefound is the All That Glitters scenario. I believe this scenario will be sold after the campaign ends, but is included in all pledges. Additional add-ons include an all-new box to hold all components for the expansions, metal coin replacements, Point of Interest minis, the Character Traits module, and the Adversity module.
Luckily, using the Witchwood expansion does not really change the functionality of the base game. Therefore, if you are a big fan of Destinies, as we are, then adding Witchwood merely adds more of the adventurey goodness that is found in every play of Destinies. This expansion, though, has our heroes traipsing through a fantastical forest rife with great side characters, quests, and creatures of legend. Oh, and try not to get yourself caught up in the maze held within. It’s a bugger to escape without a map.
The initial scenario that reviewers were allowed access to directed me to travel across most of the provided Map tiles, introduced some of the new Items, and provided an excellent beginning tutorial into the new content. As with base Destinies, this expansion will have you agonizing over which Items to keep and which to ditch (witch to ditch?), and depending on decisions made, can really affect the overall story you experience.
Official recommendation: It is so trifficult (thank you, Bluey) for me to dislike anything being added to one of my favorite games of all time. Witchwood certainly lives up to the hype surrounding it since its launch, and has only fortified my love of the system and setting of Destinies. Yes, I know it still uses QR codes and they are kind of ugly, but it does not bother this gamer at all. If it bothers you, then maybe check out Divinus when it hits retail. Should you still be excited by this new offering from Lucky Duck Games then you will definitely want to add this to your collection. Will I still play Destinies without this expansion? Absolutely. Am I super pumped to be able to pull out some new content and modules to spice up my gameplay? Very much so. If you are like me and a fan of this series/franchise, then please consider backing it on Gamefound ASAP! The campaign ends November 11, 2022 so get that pledge in!
