In the expansion review series, we take a look at a game expansion to discuss whether it is a necessary purchase/addition to one’s collection.
This breakdown is for the push-your-luck dice game Dungeon Roll, and the expansion packs: Booster Pack #1, Booster Pack #2, and Winter Heroes.
Both Booster Packs each add 8 new heroes to the game, and the Winter Heroes expansion adds 4 new winter-specific heroes, as well as some winter-themed treasures. Instead of the typical fantasy treasures of the base game, the Winter Heroes expansion adds things like Snowballs (to take out Monsters, duh!), Coal (lose XP at the game end, womp womp), or even a Gift (select a treasure token of your choosing)!
How do these expansion packs affect the gameplay? Honestly, not a whole lot. The game plays exactly the same way, just each new hero just comes with unique abilities and powers that were not included in the base game. Dungeon Roll comes with 8 heroes already, and since the game is based around dice rolling, your strategy of when to use your powers/abilities differs from game to game. These expansions merely add more variety and offer potentially new strategic options as well.
Is owning these expansion packs absolutely necessary for satisfaction when playing Dungeon Roll? No. But it does just mix things up a little, and can help keep the gameplay from feeling stagnant with only the same 8 heroes every time.
Official recommendation: Dungeon Roll is a nice little dice game. It doesn’t get to the table too much anymore for me, but if it is a frequently-played game for you, consider picking up these expansion packs. The new options and unique abilities could help make the game feel fresh and new all over again.
